OVERVIEW

With the magnificent Midtown Mile to the left, picturesque Piedmont Park to the right, world-class culture next door, the hottest clubs in the zone and specialty shopping everywhere, you’re in the middle of it all at the W Atlanta – Midtown.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts believe that economic growth and the well-being of society are inextricably tied to the health of the environment. Accordingly, we embrace our responsibility for environmental stewardship and are committed to integrating leading environmental practices and sustainability principles into our core business strategy.

The GSky Green Walls installed at several of their hotels are perfect examples of Starwoods leading environmental principles put into practice in a high-level design setting. The Green Wall design includes blocks of plants that are pruned to be separated apart with 2′ strips of LED lights separating strips of plants along the wall. There are three varieties of the same species of plants to keep an even texture to the wall, while providing a color transition to each block of plants.

THE PROCESS
Installation took place over an 8 day period. The installation was challenging due to the uneven concrete surface that the Green Wall frames had to be mounted onto. When the frames missed a concrete protrusion, they had to be shored up with stainless steel nuts to make a flush surface across the entire wall.
MAINTENANCE
Maintenance is relatively easy as this wall is not very high and has a 18" walkway across the entire front of the wall. Shadowed areas underneath the overhang on the left side of the wall are susceptible to powdery mildew as the plants get little to no direct sunlight to burn the mildew off and must be treated on a quarterly basis with an organic mixture containing potassium bicarbonate to stop the mildew from setting in on the plants. The plants remain healthy as long as they are regularly treated.
